Review: Garnier Nutritioniste Nutri-Pure Detoxifying Wet Cleansing Towelettes, Oil-Free

Hello All!
Time for another product review! I have been playing with a few new products recently so stay tuned for those reviews soon!

I ran out of my favorite makeup remover wipes, Olay Daily Facials Express Wet Cleansing Cloths (sensitive or for all skin types), and wanted to try something new. I love Garnier's hair products so I decided to their makeup remover wipes.

Well yall, this was a huge PRODUCT FAIL....and here is why:

PRODUCT RANTS:
1. These come in a 25 count package, which is pretty normal for makeup towelettes. However, my Olay comes with 30 for the same price (roughly 4 bucks).
2. This wipe has soooo much fragrance on it, it is RIDICULOUS. I took one out of the package and took a step back because the smell was so overpowering. I was a bit nervous about using it because my skin typically doesn't do well with high fragrance face products.
3.....I should have listened to my intuition because MY SKIN BROKE OUT LIKE CRAZY!!! I know it was a result of these wipes because my allergy breakouts are completely different then normal blemishes. My forehead always gets hit the hardest, and the breakouts are normally larger than normal, and hard (no puss or anything..TMI, but oh well, it's my blog!), and linger for a looonnngggg time (It's been almost two weeks and they are still there. I look crazy!)

PRODUCT RAVES:
1. Although the smell was overpowering, at least it was a pleasant smell! It does smell rather fresh and sweet, which is probably why I still decided to put it on my face!
2. The towelette isn't small and is about average size.
3. It did remove my makeup well, including eye makeup. There was a little bit of mascara left, but that is typical for eye makeup, which I normally use EVOO to use for removal anyway!
4. I prefer toweletes that leave moisture to your face afterward and this product did not leave my face feeling dry at all. I was able to remove my makeup and not have to apply face lotion immediately afterward.

OVERALL:
I will not be purchasing this product again. I do think the wipe is decent and does remove makeup fine, it just did not work well with my skin. I don't particularly have sensitive skin, so it may work for others just fine. Good luck!!!

My Hair Regimen: Tips for Curly Hair

So I've had a ton of compliments on my hair this past year and thought I would share my hair regimen with everyone.I have used most of these tips for as long as I can remember, but really only became diligent with following all of them for the past year or so. I can honestly say this has the longest and healthiest my hair has been. Feel free to hit me up with questions.

Basic Tips:
1. I rarely put heat to my hair.
-The only time a flat iron or blow dryer touches my hair is typically during the colder months when I sometimes straighten my hair. I can say my hair is curly and worn naturallyl 95% of the year. Limit the amount of heat that touches your hair and always use a heat protectant spray like Tresemme's Heat Protection spray or Beyond the Zone's Turn Up The Heat Protection spray.
2. I never use towels on my hair! EVER!
-I dry my hair with t-shirts and wrap it up with microfiber towels while I am putting on lotion, face masks, or whatever other pampering I plan to do before styling my hair. Also, I gently squeeze the towel into my hair to release the water..I never rub! Rubbing creates frizz which is a curly girl's nightmare!
3. After styling I use a method called PLOPPING to wrap my hair before bed.
-Hands down this is one of the best tricks I have learned for curly hair!!! Basically I take a medium sized t-shirt and lay it on a flat surface. Then I flip my head over and push my head into the t-shirt (all of your hair should be smushed onto the top of your head). Then I roll the sides of the t-shirt and pull them behind my head and tie it with a hair tie. Basically it looks like I have a turban on. What this does it creates volume in your hair. I do my hair at night and sleep with it like this. When I wake up the 'turban' has kept all of my hair flat onto the top of my head and hasn't allowed it to rub and frizz up. The result is a bunch of springy, frizz free curls! Google 'plopping' to get a visual or hit me up if you'd like me to do a whole separate entry on that! FYI: The first day after unwrapping your hair from being 'plopped' your curls will be voluminous, but seem a bit tight to your head (because they've been scrunched there for hours!). No worries, they will loosen up and the body will continue to enhance throughout the day!
4. In between washings I wrap my hair at night.
-I have a few old silk scarves that I use. I just wrap it up like you would a bandanna and again it prevents your hair from rubbing and frizzing up. I have heard some people also use silk pillows, but I don't go that far.
5. As soon as I get home all hair ties, bobby pins, etc. come out of my hair!
-We can be pretty rough on our hair with products used to style our hair. That's why it is good to let it breathe! As soon as I get home from work I take my hair down and leave it out. Sometimes I get a big old school scrunchy and loosely put it back in a low pony so that it's out of my face but that's it. I leave it down 80% of the time. This has also made it grow tremendously the last year.
6. I handle my hair as if it an expensive piece of silk
-You would be surprised at how rough you are being with your hair (and skin!)If you stop and take a day to treat your hair as if it is fragile, you will learn how gentle you should be. I only use combs when I am detangling my hair. After that, I rarely put a brush or comb to this mane. In fact, I try not to touch my hair that much at all because touching creates frizz!

Washing and Moisturizing
1. I wash my hair twice a week: no more, no less.
-Curly hair should NOT be washed daily. Our hair coils and moisture gets trapped in the curls. If you wash your hair daily you will dry it out and look a hot mess! My curls typically look great for about three days max so I can normally tell that it's time to wash my hair because they look frizzy.
2. The CurlyGirl Method and Co-Washing
-Go ahead and google the curlygirl method so you understand. Basically, it is a regimen that involves using sulfate free shampoos and silicone free conditioners and styling products. Sulfate strips your hair of your natural oils and the silicone sort of coats your hair which is why it sometimes feels 'oh so soft' after using those products. Eventually your hair gets used to it and creates a layer of silicone and yuckiness with continued use. With the curlygirl method, since you are using silicone free products and there is no build up created, you are able to essentially wash your hair with conditioner only. Every other week you can use a sulfate free shampoo for an extra clean. I used this method for about 4 months and I liked it because I saw tremendous growth. I don't follow it anymore except I only use sulfate free shampoos. I would definitely try using the method to jump start your new health hair lifestyle.
3. A wide tooth comb and detangling is a must!
-I always use a wide tooth comb to detangle my hair while in the shower with conditioner on. I flip my head to the left, detangle, flip to the right detangle, flip upsidedown, detangle, and flip back/upright and detangle. Then I put my hair in a clip and finish the rest of my shower. Rinsing the conditioner off is the last thing I do in the shower. I cannot stress how important detangling is. I had to learn this the hard way. In middle school I was lazy at it and ended up getting a huge knot at the base of my head. I had to cut my hair off and looked crazy!
4. Hair Brands
-I often rotate my brand of shampoos and conditioners because I felt my hair gets used to them and the products don't seem to work as well after a while. I like Beyond the Zone (Sally Beauty), Garnier Fructis, Paul Mitchell, and One and Only brand products the most.
5. After washing/conditioning and t-shirt drying my hair, I apply oil to my ends.
-Normally I use Argan Oil but when that is not available I use good ol' Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO). I just put some on my finger tips and apply directly to my ends. I have layers so I end it by rubbing a tiny bit throughout.
6. I use a hair mask or hot oil treatment about twice a month.
-I am a fan of DIY methods, so normally I will make an avocado hair mask which I have done a tutorial on. There are all kind of at DIY hair you can make with at home products like mayonnaise, honey, avocado, evoo, eggs, etc. Google it and tons of recipes with pop up! Of course you can always purchase hair treatments/deep conditioning treatments but normally I don't do that. Hot oil treatments are always a plus for curly hair!

Styling
1. My favorite hair tool to use is my hands!
-I pretty much do all my hair styling with my fingers. From shaping the curls around my face to making loose parts, I rarely use a comb or brush. Remember, your hair is an expensive piece of silk, so would you drag a sharp comb or rough brush through that? Nope!
2. Leave in conditioner is essential!
-After getting out of the shower and applying my oil to the ends, I follow up with a great leave in conditioner. There are a few brands I like including Paul Mitchell's The Conditioner (or the GVP version at Sally Beauty), Garnier Fructis' Sleek n' Shine leave in conditioner, and Sunsilk's Captivating Curls De-Frizz cream. I flip my head over and apply a generous amount and run it through my hair. I then detangle my hair the same way I did in the shower with a wide tooth comb.
3. I am fan of curl creams and not gels, mousse, or hairspray.
-When I was younger I had crunchy kind of curls because I used gels and mousse. Well, that was then and this is now. I have voluminous, soft, bouncy curls because of the maintenance I keep with my hair and using curl creams! I really like Beyond the Zone's Noodlehead Curling Cream. I have heard Curl-Gel-les'c (pronounced jealousy) by Curls is really good too but I have not tried it. After detangling my hair and combing it into the style I want, I just apply a generous amount to my fingertips and scrunch all around.
4. In between washings I keep my curls looking fresh with good ol' water!
-When I wake up and unwrap my hair I take a little bit of the leave in conditioner and place it on my finger tips, Then I run a bit of water onto my hands and mix it together and 'fluff' my hair. I don't rub the product into my hair, just going around the head in a scrunching motion and paying attention to the areas that seem frizzy.

So there you have it! That is pretty much my entire hair regimen and I hope you find some of the tips to be helpful!

HOLA! LOTD: Blueberry Peach (88 Matte Palette)

Girl where you been at? Yes it has been MONTHS! And no doubt I have been slacking on the blog..but that is also because I have been slacking on the makeup too. In a nutshellf, the last four months of my life have been hell and back but things are starting to look up. Basically, I have lost an important person in my life, ended a relationship, quit my job, moved out of state with my two year old to a new place where we barely know anybody. The upside is, I started a great job that provides me with stability and a positive outlook on the future. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices, right!?

Anyway, because I was living out of boxes and my life was chaotic, makeup was the last thing on my mind. When I did start to pull out the brushes the last thing I wanted to do was snap a pic..until now. I was going through a depressive streak when a friend of mind suggested that I get back to writing (personally and blogging)...and he was right...I'm back people!!

For church today I wore this peach long cardigan with navy blue bottoms and brown boots. I love the muted look of the purple/blue along with the peach. It turns it sort of like a taupe hue and reminds me of the color of denim. The combination is awesome! Enjoy!

PS. Yes my hair is supppeeerrrr long! I can't wait to start straightening it because it is getting cold out here in the midwest already! Oh and I also took this pics with my BlackBerry after running around for a few hours so my face is a bit shiny, but ohhh well!

The Concept of a Break Up Ring?!

Hello all,
So as I wrote in my last post, I have recently gone through a pretty heartwrenching break up...(ouch!). Well, a lot of my friends note buying shoes, handbags, cutting their hair, and doing whatever to make themselves feel better after a break up. Well...I have done a few things, but my most brilliant idea yet has been my concept of the BREAK UP ring!

If I was 'balling' then I definitely would have dropped some serious dough on buying me a lavish piece of jewely...but I'm a social worker and a single parent (nuff said!). I went ahead and logged onto Overstock.com which is my faaavvvoorriitee spot right now and got the two beauties below. The cross ring is a CZ gem and the Ruby ring is sterling silver with 1/10 cut diamonds. Both are fairly simple but look amazing!

The cross ring I wear on my left hand ring finger (where my wedding ring would have gone!) as a reminder to be married to God. God has called me to singlehood at this time in my life and I am working toward building a better relationship with Him. The Ruby (my birthstone) heart ring is worn on my right hand ring finger and is a reminder to be in a relationship with myself.

Too many times when we are in a relationship, we lose sight of who we are. I am not saying that I lost sight of God or myself while in my prior relationship, but these two items serve as a silent symbol of how important staying true to my faith and to myself really is to me.

PS. The color on my nails is Color Club holo polish in Fashion Addict (looove it!)

The eyes are a golden/orange/brown combo and the lips are straight orange! Of course, I still don't have a high quality camera so BlackBerry pics will have to do. LOTD: Barbie Pink (88 Matte Palette)

I'm back..for now. I was going to see my brother (www.myspace.com/therukusmusic.com) rock out at a show and decided to have some fun with my makeup. I wore a simple black tank top, with some ripped jeans, and black wedges. I spiced it up with color in the lips and some bright pink bra straps (classy I know! lol). To go with the outfit, I wanted the eyes to look a bit messy and not so polished so the blending is a bit wild and the eyeliner is not the cleanest. Also, I took these pics with my Blackberry and the lids show up more purple in the photos. In actuality, it was definitely more pink. Hope you like!

D.I.Y: Avocado Hair Mask for Shiny Hair

A few months back I was coloring my grandmother's hair with an at home coloring kit. As I was applying her signature fire engine Puerto Rican red coloring (lmao), she was telling me about how she used to put avocados in her hair to make it shiny. A lightbulb went off in my head and I was determined to find a recipe! I googled and found a simple recipe to make an at home hair mask.

You will need:
One ripe/black Avocado. I prefer to use California Avocados (smaller kind) because if you use a larger one you only need to use half. You can use the other half for a face mask if you like (post coming soon).
One egg yolk
1/2 teaspoon of olive oil
Optional: 1 tablespoon honey (I never have used this because I never remember to get honey!)
Mixing bowl/Utensils
Step 1: The avocado should be black and soft to the touch. Cut it in half to expose the seed.
Step 2: Scrape the avocado from the skin into the bowl. It should look something like this.
Step 3: Mash the avocado until fairly smooth. There will still be some bumps and lumps but try to get most of them out. It will look like baby poo. Yuck!
Step 4: Mix in the other ingredients.
Step 5: Wet your hair and divide into four sections. You can also choose not to wet your hair.
Step 6: Distribute the mask into your hair. Sometimes the lumps get stuck. Be sure to smooth it out.
Step 7: Place a plastic cap on your head and leave on for 20-30 minutes.
Step 8: Run water through your hair and rinse thoroughly. It can take some time if there are lumps but rinse well.
Step 9: Lightly, lightly, lightly shampoo your hair to get any remaining out. I recommend a sulfate free shampoo (L'Oreal has a whole line of them) or you can co-wash (wash with conditioner).

This is how it looks right after washing with no product in it.
This wet with product and after styling.
This is the next morning when dry. A bit blurry.

I love D.I.Y stuff like this! Give it a try!
